Here's a little bit of information about me, I am currently on a placement year with DMU where I am building my own Historic bakery that aims to create baked goods as well as alternatives that are appropriate for people on feeding tubes that can have a pureed diet as well as telling History through a highly popular activity. As someone who has their own invisible disability that is a PEG-J feeding tube I feel that I am suited to the role as well as having a deep understanding of what it is like to have a disability and I will try my best to help create a supportive and inclusive environment here at DMU. I recognise that everyones experience is different and I want to put an emphasis on this as I feel this isn't recognised enough as well as the fact that it shouldn't be Disability instead it's should be different ability. Having a disability doesn't stop you from getting where you want to be, yes it maybe difficult but it also helps us to develop ourselves as a person. A characteristic that I've developed over time is being able to face challenges head on because they are a good way to learn new things instead of running away from them.
If I were to be elected as the Disabled Students Part-Time Officer , I would focus on completing the following things:
1. To build up a campaign that raises awareness of invisible disabilities.
2. To enhance the inclusive environment that we have here at DMU.
3. To build more awareness of the disability support that we have at DMU.
