Every year your students’ union hosts a celebration event to recognise the positive impact DMU students have made in a variety of voluntary roles; from Liberation Officers and Course Reps, to Societies and committee members.

All nominees and winners were celebrated on Wednesday 29th May, in DSU’s venue, ‘LVL1’. The winners were first revealed live at this event, and are now revealed to all…

 

Volunteer of the Year

Presented by Priya Karasala, DSU Student Opportunities and Engagement Executive Officer.

This award goes to a student who has worked hard to offer opportunities and representation for the student body. Their commitment to supporting and empowering students has been recognised, and their passion for ensuring that every student’s voice is not only heard, but valued, shines through in everything they do.

The winner of this award is Toni Fazaeli, (Mature Students Officer, and Fine Art Course Rep).

 

ADH Course Rep of the Year

Presented by Hussain Mahetar, DSU Academic Representation Coordinator.

This award goes to a student who has been a phenomenal course rep this year. They have put their heart and soul into the role; attending every single meeting, and being a crucial member of the Student Council also. Their passion and dedication has sparked positive change within their course, resulting in numerous wins that have greatly benefitted their fellow students.

The winner of this award is Krishan Gandhi, (Product Design Course Rep).

 

New Society of the Year

Presented by Fluffy Adewola, DSU Welfare Executive Officer.

This award goes to a new society that has created a vibrant and inclusive community. They have held regular social events that have been incredibly well attended, and have been visible within the SU and across campus. We know that this society will continue to go from strength to strength.

The winner of this award is Tabletop Card Game (TCG) Society.

 

BAL Course Rep of the Year

Presented by Amir Iqbal, DSU Union Development Executive Officer.

This award goes to a student whose dedication and passion has shone through their role as a Course Rep. They have worked tirelessly to advocate the interests of students on their course, as well as taking on additional responsibilities alongside their role, and making significant positive change.

The winner of this award is Paige Billings (Business Entrepreneurship and Innovation Course Rep, and Scrutiny Panel member).

 

Inclusive Society of the Year

Presented by Komal Shahzadi, DSU Equality and Diversity Executive Officer.

This award goes to a society who has welcomed students from all walks of life into its membership. The society has held space for conversation, exploration and learning on a weekly basis, and the committee have demonstrated the true meaning of leadership. The society has nurtured a supportive and caring community that has equipped its members with skills that will serve them for many years to come.

The winner of this award is the Christian Union.

 

CEM Course Rep of the Year

Presented by Calum Travers, DSU Student Voice Coordinator (Campaign and Policy Lead).

This award goes to a student who has shown unwavering dedication to attending every meeting, whether in person or online, and has effectively communicated the needs of their course, which is what sets them apart as a truly exceptional individual.

The winner of this award is the Caitlin Doleman (Computer Games Programming Course Rep).

 

Student Led Media Award

Presented by Andy Reynolds, DSU Head of Income Generation and Marketing.

This award goes to a group who have got involved in numerous projects throughout the year, in order to really raise the profile of their society. The engagement and quality of their work, is testament to their skill and expertise; from covering the Students’ Union Elections, to the livestreaming of Varsity games, they have shown dedication to their craft.

The winner of this award is Demon TV.

 

HLS Course Rep of the Year

Presented by Hussain Mahetar, DSU Academic Representation Coordinator.

This student is an absolute rockstar as a Course Rep for HLS and for the Year 1 Psychology cohort. Their dedication and passion for helping their peers is truly remarkable, with sincerity and empathy they go above and beyond to support every student on their course. The bond they have created with their fellow Course Reps is truly inspiring as they work together to provide a service for their classmates.

The winner of this award is Violet Mitocaru (Psychology Course Rep).

 

Fundraiser of the Year

Presented by Amy Horner, DSU Head of Membership Services.

Fundraising is a great way to build community and raise awareness, and there has been some great fundraisers held for a number of different charities throughout this year. It’s not always about the amount that was raised, but about the passion, connection and educating more people about a cause. The winner of this award followed all the correct processes, held a collaborative event and raised awareness of a very worthy charity.

The winner of this award is the Pscyhology Society.

 

Committee Member of the Year

Presented by Ellen Beardsmore, DSU Student Opportunities Coordinator.

All of the nominees for this category have led their respective societies with passion, dedication and kindness. They have put in countless hours organising evets, applying for funding to enhance their members experiences, making connections with external partners so that they can hold informative guest speaker events, and being valuable members of their committees. They have shown self-motivation, flexibility and a proactive attitude throughout the year; keep hold of those qualities going forwards.

The winner of this award is Georgina Hopwood, (Chairperson of the Nursing Society, and Nursing with NMC Registration Course Rep).

 

Special Recognition Award

Presented by the DSU Executive Officer Team.

The Executive Officer team chose the nominees for this award, and we wanted to recognise each of the nominees by explaining why they have each been nominated. This award is for students who have gone above and beyond, and have put in a great amount of time and effort into their roles.

Nerissa Doran was nominated for volunteering her time as a Liberation Officer on behalf of disabled students as DMU. Her achievements are many and include the production of an accessibility map of campus, volunteering her time to support the Executive Officers’ events, and getting involved in Disability History Month plans.

Peter Wan has been nominated for volunteering his time to Demon Media, DSU and local communities. He has helped lead groups, livestreaming, and creating content for events such as DSU Student Leadership Elections, Varsity and Leicester Comedy Festival.

Mohit Shivnani has been nominated for volunteering his time to help plan Diwali with the Executive Officers, to promote cultural awareness, as well as his work to set up the SKY Society.

Roz MacGregor-Devlin has been nominated for volunteering their time to help run and support Music Society events, even though they are not a committee member, and for the work they have done with DSU to put on successful music nights and improving the overall student experience.

The winner of this award is Mohit Shivnani, (Chairperson of the SKY Society, and Business Management & HRM Course Rep).

 

Society of the Year

Presented by Priya Karasala, DSU Student Opportunities and Engagement Executive Officer.

This award goes to a society who has been visible, and has gone to great lengths to create a vibrant, thriving and talented community. They have created memorable experiences for their members, and above all, had fun. They have performed, they have held fundraisers, they have held socials, they have grown their membership and been present and visible on campus, and collaborated with DSU throughout the year.

The winner of this award is the Music Society.

 

Voice of Change

Presented by Amy Horner, DSU Head of Membership Services.

This student has been an absolutely outstanding in every aspect of their journey at De Montfort Students’ Union. Their growth and dedication throughout the years have been nothing short of awe-inspiring. As a Course Rep, and as a Disabled Liberation Officer they have gone above and beyond in their roles, truly making a difference on campus. Their compassion and determination are testament to their unwavering commitment to inclusivity and accessibility for all. They are the embodiment of true change and progress.

The winner of this award is Nerissa Doran (Disabled Students Liberation Officer, and Business Management Course Rep).
